FITNESS JOURNEY

For me, fitness is an extremely important part of my life. Our world is so packed with technology that it has led to a sedentary lifestyle for many, and fitness is often the last thing on people’s mind. Add in the fact that most foods today are the farthest thing from clean (chemical/processing free), raw, or whole, and it’s easy to see why fitness should be a priority.

Fitness, to me, is a two-pronged approach; exercise and nutrition. Many people want a pill to pop or a fad diet to do, but the greatest path is really the simplest– diet and exercise. It’s what your grandmother said. It’s what everyone truly knows deep down. And yet, often times the true way is also the hardest way.

I have fought that truth most of my adult life. My daughter was born in 1998. At the same time I was receiving my Bachelor’s degree, I was also grappling with the fact that I’d gained 60 lbs. during my four years in college. My body had ballooned up and I felt extremely defeated in my head and heart. And so the battle began. My battle included dietary supplements, fad weight loss plans, will-power & binging, and sometimes barely even eating.

After years and years of roller-coastering up and down the scale, I am finally getting to a place where I feel I understand my body, why I eat, and what discipline is needed to maintain my proper weight. This section of my blog is about my daily journey toward greater fitness, via nutrition and exercise (the simple, right way to do it).

FITNESS TRAINED & TRAINING

One huge method of exercise, for me, has become cycling. Since May of 2008, I have ridden bikes all over the great state of California to the tune of nearly 4,000 miles a year.  In January of this year I also obtained my Spinning certification in order to teach in-door cycling classes at our local gyms, In-Shape & Brenda Athletic. It’s been a great way to meet new people, stay in shape, and train for times on the road bike.

I am also currently a Certified Personal Trainer with the National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM).  The discipline and accountability that this pursuit has brought into my life has far outweighed even that of teaching spin.
