33.3% Chance of Getting Cut

Wow! Did you know that just outside the Olympic village this past weekend that four nations met to decide the world championship of Rock, Paper, Scissors.  The nations included were Ireland, Canada, the United States, and Guam.  And the medals were awarded in the same order.

Yes, Sean “Wicked Fingers” Sears took Bronze for the US.  We just barely made the medal platform.  Ireland took the Gold which got me wondering if Rock, Paper, Scissors (officially called: roshambo) is played in pubs throughout the ‘We land of Ire!’  And Canada was just excited to finish above the States in something other than geography.  What an honor!

These folks even have an official strategy guide and website… check it out.  I love when interesting sports make the main stage; cycling, table tennis, and even cycling.  But serious… Rock, Paper, Scissors?!

Lost… Season 1 & 2 done!

Well I’ve finished the first 2 seasons of Lost.  Needless to say, the addictive nature is definitely true {I don’t have it as bad as the Lostpedia people though}.  I think what really impresses me about the show is the story-telling.  Everyone has a story, a background, a reason for being on the island.  More importantly, each back story demonstrates each character’s present behavior, hang-ups, and mis-trusts.  Once again it just goes to show how much stories are key in life.  {Interesting enough because I just heard a great podcast on the very topic of stories.  Click Here to listen; 8.17.08}.

The other clever thing about the show is the unique emphasis on relationships.  It kinda like a bad reality television/sociology experiment.  The way people get along (or don’t) plays into the intrigue of the community; a very broken community at that.

Characters who make the favorites list:  Hurley, Jack, and Sun.

Characters who make the not so favorites:  Henry, Michael, and Sawyer– kinda.

Season 3 is just around the corner…

33 Miles Shy…

Today I took a training ride  that was 33 miles shy of my October Century Ride goal of 110.  It was 77 miles of tough ride which took me all over the place.  All over (for those wondering) is actually Salida, Ripon, then on to Oakdale, Knight Ferry, Old Sonora Rd (which happens to be a bit helly hilly with quite a bit of wind), around Woodward Reservoir, and finally back through Riverbank to home.

I was completely proud of myself today.  Yes, Michael Phelps racked up his 8th gold medal today, but I rode 77 miles and lived to tell (and type) about it.  And minus a few sore joints and a shockingly distinct tan line, I don’t feel all that bad.

Here’s the stats:

  • Average Speed:  16.7
  • High Speed:  40.7 (and yes, that was completely fun!)
  • Total Time:  4 hours, 26 minutes (4,500 estimated calorie burn– good!)
  • Total Distance:  77.31 miles

I feel somewhat like a hero… and also have a profound respect for Tour de France riders, especially Lance Armstrong.  This week will include a bit of a break… well, probably.

I’m Lost…

Ok, so I’m not lost.  But, I am watching the (4-season) hit show.  It’s pretty intriguing.  The story-telling and character development are good (I like the flashbacks).  It’s a bit slow at times… and I’m not sure about the ‘monster’.  We’ll see.

Everyone calls it the ‘crack’ of television so I’m not real sure that’s a good thing.  I may need an accountability partner; however, I’m quickly discovering there are quite a few people [even church people :) ] who are openly addicted.

Well, on to the next episode right…

Riding with the Sun (or Son)

I completely enjoyed riding lately!  This great cell phone photo (high quality I know) is from a recent ride up Old Sonora Rd.  It’s stunning when the sun just pierces through the clouds; rays blazing their way to the ground.

The sun, the breeze (or in some places, wind), the glide of hills, the grind of hills, the chill of cold water, the crisp air in your lungs, and the subtle burn in my legs– all of it combines for a pretty glorious 63 mile morning!

What’s truly amazing is that the next day I’ll be tired and won’t make this sunrise again, but it will come.  The glory of God will be revealed again, and I’ll be to tired to witness it.  How fortunate I am that God’s greatness never tires.

Lamentations 3:22-23 (ESV) declares “The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; His mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is Your faithfulness.”

New ‘mercies’ every morning… now that’s a ride worth taking; a God worth knowing.

P.S. – If you want to ride some morning, give me a shout.  A few of us are training for the Riverbank Cheese & Wine Century ride in October.
