I used to think it awkward to pray a written prayer. However, there are two prayers that seem to be a part of my spiritual disicplines as of late. They are extremely powerful when you stop to consider the phrasing.
The Serenity Prayer (from Celebrate Recovery)
God grant me the serenity
to accept the things I cannot change;
courage to change the things I can;
and wisdom to know the difference.
Living one day at a time;
enjoying one moment at a time;
Accepting hardships
as the pathway to peace;
Taking, as He did,
this sinful world as it is,
not as I would have it; trusting that He will make all things right
if I surrender to His Will; that I may be reasonably happy in this life
and supremely happy with Him forever in the next. Amen.

Morning Prayer Canticle (adapted from St. Patrick’s Breastplate)
Christ, as a light illumine and guide me.
Christ, as a shield overshadow me
Christ under me; Christ over me;
Christ beside me; on my left and my right.
This day be within and without me,
lowly and meek, yet all powerful.
Be in the heart of each to whom I speak;
in the mouth of each who speaks unto me.
This day be within and without me,
lowly and meek, yet all powerful.
Christ as a light; Christ as shield;
Christ beside me on my left and my right. Amen.

Mrs. Redding (name changed to protect… no just changed) does the mitzvah good deed of serving as a lay rabbi for the local Jewish congregation. And I must say that it has been some of the most insightful spiritual dialogues that I have had in a while.
