Been awhile…

2010
07.16

Well it has been awhile since I’ve posted here.  And since that time, a lot has happened.

I took a family vacation to the classy land of San Diego where we saw Shamu and the other caged Zoo animals– lots of walking but lots of fun.  Shortly after that I went with the fam back to East Tennessee to visit the in-laws and chill in the raging Southern humidity– ugh.  It was steamy, but the fellowship &  food was great (and greasy– not the fellowship).

After returning I spent most of the month reading.  I was able to finish the following books; all of which I recommend:  The Furious Longing of God, Patched Together, Working the Angles, & Forgotten God. Now I’m re-reading Sacred Companions, and starting Praying the Psalms. Scroll over the titles for a mini-review.  Reading has definitely become a renewed passion.

In addition to reading, my writing times have been revived.  I have finished the outline, intro, and a few chapter or two (almost).  It’s slow going with the schedule I keep and the creative space it requires.  I hope to have a pretty rough draft by the end of the year, but we’ll see.

At Big Valley, we are finishing up an in-depth look at the Book of James on Sunday nights in Catalyst.  It has been a great study as well as an extremely convicting one.  There is no doubt that the scripture can grip the heart like no other work of literature ever.  If you get a chance, come and listen to the conclusion this weekend and go back and podcast the rest.

Of course, there has been riding too (sounds like writing, but very different– ha!).  I finished the LIVESTRONG ride in in 5:47 (which was about the same time as last year).  That was shy of my 5:30 goal, but for doing the ride by myself with no shared drafting efforts I felt good about it.  And without a doubt, I have watched tons of TOUR de FRANCE (bummed that it’s not quite the Tour de Lance this year though– go Schleck!).  Hands down, cycling announcers Phil Liggett and Paul Sherwen are the best announcers around.

And finally… the whole first week of August will be spent cycling from the border of Nevada (near Lake Tahoe) to Monterrey, CA.  I will be serving with the Brigade Summer Camp ministry as a spiritual coordinator for a group of five guys; mostly high school and young adult.  This is a trip where we will have SAG support so I don’t have to carry all my equipment on the bike like last year (YAY!).  It’s going to be quite a bit of climbing but our longest day of 108 miles will consist of 7000′ of descent (whew!). This will be a great opportunity to be a shepherd on a road bike– combining two passions; not too shabby.

So, needless to say, life has been a whirlwind.  However, in the days to come, I hope to be a bit more active in this digital realm.  Come back tomorrow for a look at a fun visual experiment called Pictio Divina!

2010 and The Fam

2010
01.10

When I began to think about my dreams, desires, and goals during this new year, I got a weird idea.  What if I sat down and asked the fam what things they’d like to do, try, learn– or where they’d like to go?  What if I made it a goal to help them reach their goals?  That could be pretty fun!

So on New Year’s Eve day we piled in the car and went to breakfast at IHOP (where all real dreams are born).  We started off sharing about our favorite memories of 2009.  It’s funny the things that stick in the minds of 9 and 11 year olds.  The whole conversation provided a great deal of laughs.  We quickly transitioned from the past to the future.  Here is a bit of what we heard:

“Let’s go to San Diego for Vacation.”

“I’d like to go to Disney, Six Flags, or Sea World… well, at least the Santa Cruz Boardwalk.”

“I hope to take a cooking class.”

“I want to be able to play 2 worship songs on the guitar before next year.”

“I need to stop biting my fingernails…”

“I want to stop popping my knuckles”

“I want to get straight A’s this next year.”

This is going to be fun year…

Tomorrow’s weigh in will be delayed until Saturday.  I will be out of town on Thursday and Friday studying for this summer’s message series called A Summer on the Mount in addition to what I’ll be teaching Sunday in Veritas & Catalyst.

Check out the accomodations.  I’m excited to spend some great time with the Lord.

The Modesto Cheese SteakI have made it a goal for 2009 to be a better cook… or better yet, actually be a cook.  I don’t think you can consider a basic grilled hamburger to be true cooking. Fire and meat is only a recipe for a Caveman (so easy a Caveman could… never mind).

Homemade Taco Truck

The whole deal has been a lot of fun!  There is something about using your hands to prepare a meal; getting to taste, savor, and experience what you’ve spent time laboring over.  It’s almost like edible artwork or custom food architecture.

What’s even greater is being able to spend time with my family while cooking.  Kaitlyn’s become my Sous Chef (not to bad–  except for chopping onions).  Eli is our acclaimed food critic (a very honest one at that).  And mommy Michelle is the grateful Stutz Cafe customer.Turkey/Egg Sandwich & Pear Fries

There is something wonderful about having time with the fam; prepping, eating, talking, & cleaning (no wait.  That’s not quite a full family moment just yet– ha ha!).  The other night we had a laugh at King Solomon’s expense.  The story goes like this:

Kaitlyn asked about the wisdom of Solomon (referring specifically to I Kings 3:16+).  Solomon was a king that decreed a child should be cut in half to determine its true mother.  Oddly enough, the question was soon asked:  “How would he have divided the baby in half?” ( …directionally of course.  And yes, I know it sounds more morbid than it really was.  It’s just curious children, right?  right?).

Anyways…  Eli quickly chimed in:  “Diagonally!”  After the laughter died down, Kaitlyn said, “… Right, die-agonally.  I get it, ’cause it would have died.”  Needless to say, the laughter ensued again!

So needless to say, I’m enjoying the Chef-Boy-R-We!!

Spring Break, Cold Streams, and Santa Cruz…

2008
04.17

This post is about a month old. It’s been forever since I was able to truly sit and write. Of course this post was half written then, but I felt it needed publishing now anyway.

Santa Cruz Boardwalk... the biggest money machine in Santa Cruz! This past week was such a great week; probably the best week of the year actually. My beautiful wife planned a wonderful trip to the Santa Cruz mountains area. We stayed at the Mount Hermon Christian Conference Center; a place I’m loving more and more. Of course we went to the Boardwalk and Beach (brr! that’s cold water).

Wednesday morning we got to meet with a Bay Area photographer named Kristin Eldridge. Let me tell you– she does great work if she makes us look presentably photogenic (view a few pics here (click enter site/client proofing/pswd: ardenwood). That afternoon we played in the streams and skipped rocks at Mount Hermon. They were so cold! My feet were crazy numb.

We had such a great time with our kiddos at night sitting around the fireplace doing the indoor marshmallow roast and just talking. I was blown away with how our kids are becoming so in tune to what God has been saying to them and teaching them via their surroundings, experiences, and scripture. It is completely wild to be at a point with my children in which they are both understanding and questioning their young faith. It’s a privilege to be a parent in these settings.

On our final day we did the Pizza My Heart deal in Capitola; pizza, shirts, and a beach– who could ask for much more. This will definitely go down as one of my favorite vacations with the fam!
