Been awhile…

2010
07.16

Well it has been awhile since I’ve posted here.  And since that time, a lot has happened.

I took a family vacation to the classy land of San Diego where we saw Shamu and the other caged Zoo animals– lots of walking but lots of fun.  Shortly after that I went with the fam back to East Tennessee to visit the in-laws and chill in the raging Southern humidity– ugh.  It was steamy, but the fellowship &  food was great (and greasy– not the fellowship).

After returning I spent most of the month reading.  I was able to finish the following books; all of which I recommend:  The Furious Longing of God, Patched Together, Working the Angles, & Forgotten God. Now I’m re-reading Sacred Companions, and starting Praying the Psalms. Scroll over the titles for a mini-review.  Reading has definitely become a renewed passion.

In addition to reading, my writing times have been revived.  I have finished the outline, intro, and a few chapter or two (almost).  It’s slow going with the schedule I keep and the creative space it requires.  I hope to have a pretty rough draft by the end of the year, but we’ll see.

At Big Valley, we are finishing up an in-depth look at the Book of James on Sunday nights in Catalyst.  It has been a great study as well as an extremely convicting one.  There is no doubt that the scripture can grip the heart like no other work of literature ever.  If you get a chance, come and listen to the conclusion this weekend and go back and podcast the rest.

Of course, there has been riding too (sounds like writing, but very different– ha!).  I finished the LIVESTRONG ride in in 5:47 (which was about the same time as last year).  That was shy of my 5:30 goal, but for doing the ride by myself with no shared drafting efforts I felt good about it.  And without a doubt, I have watched tons of TOUR de FRANCE (bummed that it’s not quite the Tour de Lance this year though– go Schleck!).  Hands down, cycling announcers Phil Liggett and Paul Sherwen are the best announcers around.

And finally… the whole first week of August will be spent cycling from the border of Nevada (near Lake Tahoe) to Monterrey, CA.  I will be serving with the Brigade Summer Camp ministry as a spiritual coordinator for a group of five guys; mostly high school and young adult.  This is a trip where we will have SAG support so I don’t have to carry all my equipment on the bike like last year (YAY!).  It’s going to be quite a bit of climbing but our longest day of 108 miles will consist of 7000′ of descent (whew!). This will be a great opportunity to be a shepherd on a road bike– combining two passions; not too shabby.

So, needless to say, life has been a whirlwind.  However, in the days to come, I hope to be a bit more active in this digital realm.  Come back tomorrow for a look at a fun visual experiment called Pictio Divina!

Synergy (part 2)

Well, the conference went great!  Bill was excellent, I met a great group of people, and all the Big Valley presenters had a lot of great things to say.  Of course, I had loads of fun teaching my session and listening to some great stories.  You can’t go wrong encouraging people to nurture the spiritual lives of others within an intentional group dynamic.

As part of this year’s time, I made everyone exercise their creative juices by playing what I call the Screen Play Game.  I call it the screen play game because Eli and I made it up so we can call it whatever I guess (ha ha).  Let’s just say that it sure got the ball rolling (ask me about the stories people made up– they were funny).  Try playing yourself!  I guarantee you’ll have fun!

The content of what I shared was pretty similar as last year’s breakout.   I would have to say that it (my ’09 breakout) ranks up there as one of my personal favorite talks.  It’s energizing as well to hear the crowd interaction and the fun in the room.  As a side note, it was recorded on a hand-held digital recorder, so it’s not prime quality.

“I am giving up!”

Well, at least for 40 days.  I am participating in the Lenten season this year.  A way to understand Lent would be to think of it like this:  Lent is to Easter as Advent is to Christmas.  It’s a forty day preparatory season that allows you to better identify with Christ’s surrender, sacrifice, and resurrection.  Practically, lent is expressed in “giving up something” tangible in order to be more attentive to “my desire for Christ (alone)”.

I was somewhat sure of what I was giving up before the Ash Wednesday Service at Big Valley Grace today.  And that short gathering confirmed it all the more.  Jon Byron mentioned that Jesus’ first temptation was to turn the desert into a bakery.  That insight really struck me.  I have heard the story of Christ’s temptation many times, but that phrase really got me today!  That is a category of sin I haven’t really pictured; me turning my deserts into bakeries of grace indulgence.  Wow! As convicted as I felt, I was rescued by hearing my name read aloud followed by the pronouncement of the forgiveness because of the work of Christ on the cross.

So, what am I giving up? I think it’s best described as emotional eating.  Others would call it sweets or snacks.  I have found that this mindless moment of rewarding or comforting myself with food is a huge struggle for me.  It truly is medication verses directing my soul craving to conversation and prayer with Christ.

For those of you who think it’s a small surrender, then good.  A small surrender every day can lead to great change!  That is the case made in this book too.

Are you making any small surrenders in life right now?  Giving anything up? It’s a good question to ask every now and again.

If you get a chance, click the pic above and give a listen to a recent sermon series I taught at Big Valley.  The whole series revolved around three priorities Christ gave us out of John 15:1-17.  For me, it was an encouraging moment to reflect on simple, yet powerful, truths that shape our relationship with God and others.

Give a listen, send me some feedback, ask a question, enjoy…

DAY 48: Focus!

06/06/09:  217.6

Yes, I cheated a bit!  I did have a bit too much frozen yogurt, 4 fried chicken strips, and a bit of wedding cake & dinner indulgences (from the beautiful Garrett Dutter, Sarah Davis– now Dutter– wedding extravaganza).  That is somewhat unfortunate because I was close to 215 and under.  Now I have to wait a few days longer.  These days and lower numbers are getting harder and harder.  I need to stay focused!

In the words of Mr. Mayagi, “Focus, Daniel-son!”

I did ride to Knight’s Ferry this morning for the Catalyst Community Rhythm of Life, Extended Personal Communion Experience (what a title huh?).  That’s a good 60 miles and few thousand calories burned.

It is getting more and more difficult to lose weight the closer I get to my goal.  But my shape is definitely changing for the better.  I was able to fit into a large (not XL) cycling jersey for the first time and I had to mail back another jersey because it was too big!  I also had fun trying on shirts at Kohl’s; not to buy, but to enjoy the lack of ‘X’ in the sizing label!  Things are changing… not quite there, but getting closer.

last night was a blast…

I had a great time last night vision-casting for the ministry I lead. Take a listen here. These next few weeks are going to be so fun!
